When to book your cake smash celebration for maximum fun and the best photos.
The cake smash is one of the most joyful photography sessions you can have — and timing matters more than you might think. Get the timing right and you are almost guaranteed smiles, curiosity, and that irresistible cake-covered grin. Here is everything you need to know.
The Golden Age: Around 12 Months
The ideal age for a cake smash is right around baby's first birthday — typically between 10 and 14 months. At this age, babies are curious and engaged enough to interact with the cake, but not yet cautious or anxious about new textures. They are also at peak cuteness for portraits: round chubby cheeks, big eyes, that wiggly excited energy.
Why Not Earlier?
Before 10 months, most babies do not have the motor skills or curiosity to really engage with a cake. They may not sit up independently for long, and the reactions tend to be more passive. The magic of a cake smash comes from watching baby discover and destroy — and that works best from around 10–12 months.
Why Not Much Later?
Toddlers over 18 months can sometimes be more opinionated — they may refuse to engage, become distracted, or get overwhelmed. Every child is different, but the 10–14 month window tends to produce the most naturally joyful results.
Book Ahead
We recommend booking your cake smash 4–6 weeks before baby's birthday. This gives us time to design your custom theme, source props and backdrops, and arrange the baby-safe cake. Popular dates fill up quickly, especially around December and January.
Your little one's first birthday is a milestone worth celebrating beautifully. We cannot wait to create something magical with you.
