When is the Best Age for a Newborn Photoshoot?

The perfect timing window for newborn photography — and what to expect at different ages.

The question we are asked most often by expecting parents: "When should we book the newborn photoshoot?"

The Golden Window: 5–14 Days

The ideal age for a traditional newborn photoshoot is between 5 and 14 days old. During this window, babies are in their sleepiest phase — they curl up naturally, sleep deeply, and have that magical "brand new" look that changes so quickly.

Why Not Earlier?

Sessions in the first 5 days can work but babies are often more unsettled as feeding is being established. We recommend waiting for at least day 5 wherever possible.

2–4 Weeks: Still Beautiful

Sessions at 2–4 weeks are still wonderful — baby is slightly more awake and alert, which means more expressive open-eye shots. We simply adjust our approach accordingly.

Beyond 4 Weeks

Babies older than 4 weeks are more alert and less flexible for curly poses. Sessions at this age focus more on lifestyle and awake portraiture — equally beautiful but a different style.

Book Now, Shoot Later

We always recommend booking your date before baby arrives. We have a confirmed date ready and you simply contact us when baby is born to finalise the exact session day.
